The sound of battle reached the lads. Dharman shared a quick worried glance with Sal. He’d felt it too. The Call still thundered in his blood, but it had changed somehow. It seemed bleaker, darker, as though ...

As though we might be too late.

“Nay,” he swore beneath his breath. He refused to even consider it. Ahead, the grass of the Plains gave way to red clay and a drop off. Tightening his grip on the na’kindre, he shouted, “Jump!” to the other lads so they were aware of the changing terrain.

The na’kindre leaped into the air. Dharman leaned back, his head falling against the powerful haunches of his mount as they fell nearly twenty feet into water. Both of them sank beneath the surface a moment, but the na’kindre gave a powerful surge, rearing up out of the water, snorting and pawing its way to the bank.

Dharman’s stomach gave a sickening lurch at the sight of the battle.

Khul’lanna crouched on a slight incline away from the main fight, which was fast moving toward her. In the center fought the Blood. At least, Dharman thought it must be Gregar. He couldn’t make out the Blood’s face or body at all. The shadows were too thick.

The Shadowed Blood was coming for her.

Dharman charged up the hill, the lads behind him. Bodies covered the ground, a trail of death leading toward her. Blood coated the grass, most of it likely Gregar’s. Dharman could only imagine how many wounds the Blood must bear. He saw a sword hack at the shadowed mass, and Gregar’s arm appeared briefly, bone glistening wetly, but before Dharman’s very eyes, flesh started to knit back over the vicious wound.

Khul’lanna must be Healing him, offering her own blood as sacrifice. She’d bleed herself out trying to keep him alive, and for what? So Gregar could slaughter her as soon as he reached her?

A Death Rider never stopped, not until he or his mark were dead. Yet the Shadowed Blood couldn’t die, because Khul’lanna refused to let him go.

Dharman had heard the Call, answered as best as he could, and it would all be for naught if Gregar reached her first. “Fly, my friend,” he whispered to the na’kindre. “Put me in front of her else she dies.”

Somehow, the na’kindre found more speed, fighting up the hill, digging into the soft ground. So close. Gregar was paces away from her. The ivory rahke dipped beneath the closest outlander’s armpit and he shrieked, falling to the ground. Two soldiers had reached Khul’lanna. Lurching to her feet, she fought without her usual grace.

Dharman saw the arrow in her shoulder and bit the inside of his lip so hard he tasted blood. Weakened by her own wounds, blood dripping down her wrist from the sacrifice she’d made to Heal the Blood, she wouldn’t last long. Her arm quivered, her knees trembling, her face pale. She’d nearly killed herself trying to save the doomed Blood.

Raging in his mind, Dharman threw himself off the na’kindre’s back, straining to reach her before the Shadowed Blood.
